$728,000 from the Veteran and Family Well-Being Fund to Support Ground-Breaking Treatment Program
Dartmouth, NS - (August 13, 2019)
The Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia is proud to announce funding from Veterans Affairs Canada through the Veteran and Family Well-Being Fund. The $728,000 in funding over five years will support the Foundation’s Landing Strong Named Grant. Landing Strong is a ground-breaking program located in Windsor, Nova Scotia for veterans and first responders living with PTSD, and their loved ones.
“We are incredibly pleased to provide financial support to this innovative program,” says Foundation President & CEO Starr Cunningham. “Thanks to the support of Veterans Affairs Canada, those who’ve dedicated their career to helping others will receive the help they need closer to home.”
The funding will support Landing Strong’s three-month intensive day-treatment program- the first of its kind in Nova Scotia. The program helps veterans and first responders living with mental illness overcome difficulties connecting with loved ones and their community following trauma. Many veterans have to travel out of province for expensive treatment which creates barriers.
“At Landing Strong, we are building the capacity to help them here at home and are establishing a continuum of care that provides the level of support veterans and first responders need, when they need it,” says Landing Strong Founder Dr. Belinda Seagram. “By offering booster sessions and additional support we will be the treatment program just around the corner that never goes away. As family engagement is also a critical aspect of recovery, this funding will support Landing Strong’s programs geared to assisting family members of those affected by PTSD, anxiety and depression.”
The Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia established its Landing Strong Named Grant in February 2018. The addition of this funding from the Veteran and Family Well-Being Fund brings the total funds raised to date to $920,000.
