The Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia is pleased to announce the third event in its year-long Opening Doors – End Family Violence (ODEFV) campaign will take place June 2nd in Millbrook First Nation. Made possible by a Department of Justice Canada grant and support from Lawtons, ODEFV will visit five rural communities in Nova Scotia throughout 2015 and 2016. The first two events took place in Pictou County in October 2015, and Annapolis Valley in March 2016.
Millbrook First Nation was identified as an important location for Opening Doors- End Family Violence.
On June 2nd, residents of Millbrook First Nation and surrounding areas are invited to attend a free session at the Millbrook Community Hall. The event begins at 6:00 p.m. and will run for approximately 2 hours.
The event will feature a keynote address from Dr. Stan Kutcher, Sun Life Financial Chair in Adolescent Mental Health and the Director of World Health Organization Collaborating Care in Mental Health Policy and Training at Dalhousie University and IWK Health Centre in Canada. Dr. Kutcher is a renowned expert in adolescent mental health and leader in mental health research, advocacy, training, and policy and has been involved in mental health work in over 20 countries. ODEFV Millbrook First Nation will also feature remarks from a first voice speaker, local entertainment, information about a local mental health grant funded by the Foundation, a question and answer period, door prizes, and takeaway resources. It will be emceed by Starr Dobson.
“It’s important to bring this event to the community with the issue of mental health being prevalent amongst community members,” says Millbrook First Nation Chief, Bob Gloade. “It will provide support, assistance and direction to those who are looking for help.
The Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia encourages all members of the community to attend this informative and inspirational event. Together, we’re changing the way people think.
The next Opening Doors – End Family Violence workshops are being planned for Cape Breton and Digby later this year.
