The iPad Lending Library was established by the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia to ensure clients have access to this technology for fitness, work readiness, games and other learning. Through recreation therapy programming, the iPads are available for loan to all units at the Nova Scotia Hospital.
The iPad Lending Library launched at the Foundation AGM on July 7, 2015 and has been managed since then by the Foundation office. However as of Monday, September 21, 2015, the program will be maintained by staff of the Nova Scotia Hospital Library (NSH Library), experts in digital technologies. The NSH Library is located on the first floor of the Hugh Bell Building on site at the hospital. The library is open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. with free Wi-Fi, comfortable seating and a beautiful view of the Halifax harbour.
Librarian Educator, Lara Killian is looking forward to managing the iPad Lending Library initiative. She says, “The library is the place where we maintain both text and digital collections and keep up to date on emerging technology. It’s our job to make technology accessible for clients and staff of the Nova Scotia Hospital.”
Library staff are working hand- in-hand with the Foundation to ensure this initiative is a success.
President & CEO of the Foundation, Starr Dobson is delighted with the response this initiative has received so far. “The iPads are wonderful resources for learning and socializing. We are happy to bring this technology to clients and encourage them to keep in touch with family, friends, current events and social media while in hospital.”
