Nadine Léger de Blois is a caregiver, advocate, peer supporter and so much more. She is the caregiver for a family member living with an Operational Stress Injury and has spent many years as a Family Peer Support Coordinator for family members of individuals living with Operational Stress Injuries. She is invested in this cause in both her personal life and her professional career.
“I’ve had the pleasure of working with Nadine for a number of years, says Dani Alarie. “Nadine's professionalism, dedication to families, compassion, knowledge and experience makes her stand out. Too often peer supporters and caregivers are overlooked, but their efforts have lasting effects on those they work with, including their colleagues.”
Nadine is on the frontlines of advocating for better care and services for families impacted by Operational Stress Injuries and has shown creativity and dedication in developing valuable programs, educational workshops and opportunities for families to come together and support one another. She has coordinated both group and one-on-one peer support and has been mobile in doing so – she’s been known to travel long distances to connect with her peers.
“I am a believer in community capacity building while creating and holding a trusting, safe space for individuals to speak their truth and share their stories,” says Nadine. ”When we honour the imprint of our past experiences, we open opportunities for self-healing. Allowing individuals to recognize that they are completely whole and resourceful diminishes public stigma and softens internal judgement so we can learn and grow together creating strong and healthy generations.”
Nadine advocates self-care, healthy boundaries and taking care of oneself and one's own mental health while also supporting the mental health of a loved one. She has been described as “a gift to the community”, and has offered immeasurable, valuable and necessary support to so many.
“Peer support is a powerful tool,” says Starr Cunningham, Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia President & CEO. “Nadine Léger de Blois goes above and beyond to connect Nova Scotians with people they can identify with and learn from, ultimately providing support, comfort and hope. Congratulations Nadine – you inspire us all.”
