GRANT RECIPIENTS
The Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia administers a Community Grants Program to support initiatives throughout the province that provide hope and eradicate stigma surrounding mental illness and addiction.
COMMUNITY GRANTS 2020-2021
(The following organizations have received funding from Community Grants for April 1, 2020 - March 31, 2021.
Cape Breton Hope Project Foundation
Horticulture Therapy
The Hope Project Foundation is a live-in trauma informed treatment center for women with substance use disorders in Cape Breton that have experienced homelessness. The new horticulture therapy treatment will allow for the residents to have access to an onsite greenhouse and learn to grow food to provide an improvement in global mental health, while developing new skills and knowledge that could lead to future employment, as well as an increase in resiliency.
Eating Disorders NS
Online Support Program
This online support program will reach 150 individuals across the province impacted by eating disorders, providing 26 online sessions throughout the year, designed to facilitate access to the mental health system and other resources with anonymity, and provide appropriate tools and support for recovery.
KIDS HELP PHONE
Maximizing Mental Health Access for Young People in Nova Scotia
With the growing demand for support, this funding will continue to facilitate consistent access for youth to connect with someone 24 hours, 365 days a year, to reduce distress and severity of mental health issues for youth and prevent tragic outcomes.
LOVE Nova Scotia
Sipekne'katik & Membertou Succeed and Proceed Program
This program will support young adults in First Nations Communities, who‘ve experienced violence and mental health problems, with additional one on one support to eliminate barriers in transitioning to independent adulthood.
MetroWorks Employment Association
Green House and Green Growth
This program will allow for the ongoing support and expansion of the community gardening project at the NS Hospital and East Coast Forensic Hospital , including additional green space for the existing gardens, and new cooking program aimed at inclusion to grow hope and sense of community.
New Start Society
Project Dovetail-Caring Dads Parenting Program
An evidence based program that addresses family violence, through teaching and coaching fathers to change their behaviors to enhance the well-being and safety of their children and family.
Pathways to Employment Society
Under One Umbrella
This Cape Breton area project will reduce stigma by bringing together community partners to empower individuals living with mental health and substance use disorders. The program will enhance quality of life though community inclusion and access to a variety of health services and community-based resources.
South Shore Sexual Health
The TransFORMATION Closet
This project supports youth and vulnerable populations on Nova Scotia’s south shore with access to gender affirming items allowing youth to align their gender expression with their gender identity. This initiative will ultimately reduce gender dysphoria, and improve mental health outcomes and confidence, while reducing violence.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Halifax
Intergenerational In-School Mentoring
This pilot program will support meaningful mentoring relationships between seniors and children in the St. Margaret’s Bay area to enhance and improve the mental health of all participants.
ElevateHER Mental Health Support Services
Girl Code Mental Health Programming
Girl Code is a holistic program with content that strives to focus on girls’ strengths and capabilities, and create a solid foundation for their future. The mentorship program will be delivered in both Truro and Shelburne for youth 9-13 years, providing guidance and support from role models in a safe, and informal approach to address mental health, with a gender and mental health analysis facilitated by a registered therapist.
The John Howard Society of Nova Scotia
Life Skills Programs
The Life Skills Project will provide Anger Management, Emotional Intelligence, Healthy Relations Programming, and foster a sense of community while teaching mental health skills and well-being.
