Honouring a Legacy of Compassion Through Monthly Giving

For Doug Buffett, supporting mental health is deeply personal.

For the past 13 years, Doug has been a monthly donor to the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia, giving in honour of his late brother, Dr. Lawrence Buffett — a caring, compassionate and well-respected psychiatrist who dedicated his life to helping others.

Born in Glace Bay, Dr. Buffett began his career at the Douglas Hospital in Montreal before bringing his knowledge and experience back home to Nova Scotia, where he practiced at the Nova Scotia Hospital. Throughout his career, he was known not only for his professionalism, but for his generosity, kindness and commitment to supporting both his patients and his community.

Those qualities left a lasting impression on Doug.

“Mental illness is not something to be ashamed of and it is important that we continue to reduce stigma,” says Doug. “Support is critical and the impact on families is very real.”

After losing his brother, Doug wanted to find a meaningful way to honour his memory while continuing to support causes that mattered deeply to him. Becoming a monthly donor felt like a natural fit.

Monthly donations provide reliable, ongoing funding that helps the Mental Health Foundation invest in community-based mental health and addictions programs across Nova Scotia. Through grants designed by communities, for communities, these programs help foster connection, compassion and hope for people and families throughout the province.

For Doug, monthly giving is about continuing his brother’s legacy of care and ensuring others have access to support when they need it most.

“Lawrence believed in giving back,” Doug says. “This is one way I can continue that.”

The Mental Health Foundation is grateful to monthly donors like Doug, whose consistent generosity helps strengthen mental wellness in communities across Nova Scotia every day.
