Strengthening Identity, Culture, and Connection

Connection to culture can be a powerful source of healing.

With support from a Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia grant, Mi’kmaw Circle of Hope Society hosted engagement sessions for gender-diverse and 2SLGBTQIA+ youth to raise awareness and reduce stigma around two spiritedness.

Through sweat lodge ceremonies, discussion circles, and creating medicine pouches, participants explored traditional teachings while strengthening their connection to culture, community, and identity. The sessions created a welcoming space where youth could learn, share experiences, and build a deeper understanding of what it means to be two spirited.

The impact of the program is reflected in participants’ own words:

“Two spirits are there to bridge the gap between men and women.”

“Prayers, sweats, sundance – that’s what got me through… Ceremony is healing!”

Community-led initiatives like this help create spaces where people feel seen, supported, and connected.

Grant applications open July 2. If your organization has an idea that supports mental wellness in your community, we encourage you to apply and help build stronger, more connected communities across Nova Scotia.
