Brotherhood & Sisterhood
The Nova Scotia Brotherhood Fund and the Nova Scotia Sisterhood Fund support the Nova Scotia Brotherhood and Sisterhood Initiatives by increasing funds to enhance and expand culturally appropriate mental health supports and services for men and women of African descent.
These initiatives are free programs for Black men and women to access health care in the community to improve overall health and wellbeing. A team of health care professionals provide culturally appropriate primary medical care plus health and wellness services for men and women of African descent across Halifax Regional Municipality.
Mental health services include:
- Access to a clinical therapist, social worker, psychiatrists and navigation to community-based mental health resources through a Wellness Navigator
- Peer support groups such as Safe Space Talks, the Nova Scotia Black Men’s Health League, and Barbershop Talks and Salon Talks
- Mental health literacy such as Anger Management and Emotional Intelligence in partnership with the John Howard Society of Nova Scotia (Brotherhood)
- Physical fitness and exercise in collaboration with the Black Wellness Cooperative of Nova Scotia
- A Community Liaison who develops partnerships with community groups to bring health-related programs and services into local communities
