Creating Sparks: Building connection, confidence and resilience

Big Brothers Big Sisters is helping young people build meaningful relationships, explore their interests and strengthen their sense of belonging through Creating Sparks, a project supported by the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia.

The project connects youth with trained mentors for community-based activities designed to help develop social skills and peer relationships. Exploring new activities also gives young people opportunities to discover their talents, challenge themselves and build resilience.

At the heart of the project is the power of a consistent, supportive relationship. Big Brothers Big Sisters’ approach recognizes that strong developmental relationships can help young people build social-emotional skills, strengthen their mental health and well-being, and feel more connected at school and in their communities.

For participants, that can mean learning more about themselves and the relationships they want to have with others.

“I liked the group because it helped me understand that I didn’t have to be friends with everyone, especially if they weren’t nice to me, and I trust myself more.” — youth participant

By having trained mentors who consistently support and engage with youth, Creating Sparks creates opportunities for meaningful relationships and safe, welcoming spaces where young people can express themselves. Connecting with like-minded peers can strengthen a sense of belonging and help youth develop a positive identity, build confidence and feel empowered to use their voices and make positive choices.
