Our Community Grants support community-based mental health and addiction projects, and we love to see new and innovative initiatives.
We are proud to fund the development and delivery of Autism Nova Scotia’s new gender-based violence/intimate partner violence module for their established Healthy Relationships, Sexuality & Autism curriculum. This will be the first autism-specific GBV/IPV prevention module of its kind in Nova Scotia, designed to be inclusive, accessible, and responsive to the diverse needs of Autistic youth and adults.
Autistic adults face disproportionately high rates of violence and exploitation due to social exclusion, barriers to education, and systemic discrimination. Existing resources often fail to reflect autistic communication styles, sensory needs, and social learning differences—leaving many without the tools to understand consent, boundaries, and power imbalances.
Since the Healthy Relationships, Sexuality & Autism – Online Resource Bank has been accessible, it has been accessed nearly 1,000 times, providing tools and information for people living with autism and educators.
“Too often, Autistic individuals are expected to navigate complex relationship dynamics without access to information that actually reflects how they communicate, learn, and experience the world. This module changes that.
It creates space for conversations about consent, boundaries, and safety in a way that is accessible, relevant, and empowering. By grounding this work in the realities of Autistic people’s lives, we are not only filling a critical gap, we are helping individuals build the knowledge and confidence they need to form safer, healthier relationships.”
