We love to learn how projects funded through our Community Grant create lasting impact!
We’re thrilled to share the ripple effect of Mosaic Community Homes’ (formerly Metro Community Housing Association) The Explorer’s Club.
This initiative supported individuals living with mental illness who spent much of their lives in institutional settings, which meant they had limited opportunities for choice in recreational, cultural, or social activities. As a result, they may not know what they enjoy, what their interests are, or even what options are available in the wider community.
Meaningful activities and social connection play an important role in supporting mental wellness. This project provided a structured yet flexible opportunity for participants to try new things, connect with others, and reimagine their place in the world.
In addition to trying new opportunities, participants began identifying activities they wanted to continue and expressing interest in building shared experiences into their routines.
The resulting bowling league, art club, cooking club, life skills club, Participants’ Council, lunch club, coffee club, and chess club demonstrate how exploration can lead to sustained opportunities for connection, skill development, and participant involvement.
These clubs also provide opportunities for participants to build relationships around shared interests, develop confidence through repeated participation, and take greater ownership of their time and activities.
“This funding has helped us create opportunities that go beyond activities. It has helped create moments of connection, choice, confidence, and belonging.” – project staff
Your support helps make projects like The Explorer’s Club possible. Together, we can continue creating opportunities for connection, belonging, and better mental health in communities across Nova Scotia.
