Every Step Forward: Movement, Connection and Mental Wellness

Physical activity can play an important role in supporting mental health and recovery. Through programs that encourage movement, connection and routine, participants are building confidence, community and a sense of belonging one step at a time.

The Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia is proud to support initiatives that complement clinical work within the Nova Scotia Health Mental Health and Addictions Program (Central Zone). From exploring the community to building life skills and finding enjoyable pastimes, these programs help support people on their journey toward wellness.

One example is Connections, a recovery-focused program that provides supports and opportunities to adults living with mental illness who experience substantial functional challenges in their day-to-day lives. Connections offers structured programming that combines physical activity with social connection, including walking groups led by supportive staff. These programs provide participants with encouragement, guidance and achievable goals in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

For many participants, the benefits extend far beyond exercise.

“The walking program gives me a reason to get out of bed in the morning,” shared one regular participant. “It is something I look forward to twice per week and without it I would not be as active or have as much reason to get out. I like seeing people and having encouragement to stay active.”

Programs like this help reduce feelings of isolation while creating opportunities for meaningful connection and community building. They also reinforce the close relationship between physical and mental health — something that can often be overlooked when individuals are focused on managing mental illness.

Last year, some Connections participants took their walking goals even further by participating in the Purple Cow 5K during Blue Nose Marathon weekend. The event became an opportunity to celebrate consistency, personal growth and the power of working toward a shared goal together.

As excitement builds for this year’s Blue Nose Marathon Giv’er Charity Challenge, we are reminded that movement looks different for everyone. Whether it’s a walk with peers, training for a race or simply taking the first step outside, physical activity and connection can have a meaningful impact on mental wellness.

By supporting community-based programs like Connections, donors are helping create healthier, more connected communities across Nova Scotia.

Walkers and runners of all ages and abilities are invited to join #TEAMMENTALHEALTH in support of the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia at the Blue Nose Marathon Giv’er Charity Challenge May 15-17, 2026.
