Many of our Community Grants focus on connection because strong social bonds are an important factor in positive mental health. Grant recipient Spider Video hosted a Story Slam this week, bringing the community together to share personal stories about mental wellness and meaningful change. Starr Cunningham, President & CEO of the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia, also offered remarks during the event.
From the open mic stories to the featured storytellers, the narratives were compelling and carried themes of self-acceptance, shifting perspective, and connection. Storytelling offers a powerful way to share authentic insight, foster meaning-making, and strengthen community connection.
As the audience journeyed with storytellers along the mental health spectrum, there were many relatable moments that deepened understanding of mental health experiences. The cohort of storytellers also built strong bonds through weeks of coaching in preparation for the live event. The coaching process and peer connections helped participants process their mental health journeys.
“I came here to tell a story… but what I didn’t expect was how much the process would help me mentally. This has been part of my healing, and I’m grateful for it.” – storyteller
This year’s Mental Health Week theme is “Come Together, Canada!” This week, and every week, when we come together, we build stronger, more connected, and more resilient communities.
The stories will be posted to Halifax Story Slam or you can watch the livestream here.
