Our vision is to see all Nova Scotians thriving in their communities, and we’re thrilled to support the East Preston Day Care & Family Resources Centre’s project Empowering African Nova Scotian Adults: A Mental Health & Wellness Initiative through our Community Grants.
This project is helping African Nova Scotian youth and adults move from surviving to thriving. During the 3-month program, which is tailored to the unique challenges Black communities face, participants learn coping strategies, emotional processing, and healthy practices aimed at improving mental health.
Separate sessions are hosted for the youth and the parents/caregivers. Each group is learning skills to build resilience: communication, dealing with loss, self-care and grounding techniques. The program will culminate with an intergenerational winter carnival for the parents and youth to integrate the learnings and deepen a sense of community and family bonds.
Here is a quote from one of the participants:
“Sessions like this are not only uplifting, but you always walk away feeling like you connected with people that you can truly relate to on a deeper level. There’s something powerful about being in a space where others understand your experiences, share similar challenges, and celebrate the same victories. The conversations feel genuine, the support feels real, and the encouragement lingers long after the session ends. It’s more than just a gathering—it’s a reminder that you’re not alone, and that meaningful connections can grow when people come together with openness and authenticity.”
