September is Suicide Prevention Month. Through our Community Grants, we support suicide prevention all year with projects like the Kings County Family Resource Centre’s Suicide Intervention Certification project.
In partnership with CMHA, KCFRC delivered Applied Suicide Intervention and Skills Training (ASIST) to 30 people, including staff and community members.
ASIST equips participants with the skills and knowledge to effectively intervene with individuals at risk of suicide. By inviting community members to attend training, the project helps foster a stronger, more supportive environment within the Family Resource Centre, and across Kings County. While the training has been completed, the positive impact will continue.
“Two days after we completed the ASIST training, my daughter-in-law phoned, in the throes of a depressive episode. Thanks to the training, I was able to ask whether she was having suicidal thoughts and open that conversation. She had already made an appointment with her doctor and, when I phoned her the next day, told me the doctor had opened up some new lines of treatment. ASIST gave me the confidence and the words to be a support in her desperate hour.” — Participant
