September is Big Brothers Big Sisters Month and the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia is pleased to support programming in Pictou County and HRM through our Community Grants.
Big Brothers Big Sisters facilitates transformative, developmental mentoring relationships for youth at risk of not fulfilling their potential. BBBS supports the mentor, mentee and family, so youth can work on relationship skills, positive identity, mental wellness and commitment to learning. Some of the programs we have funded create positive connections – with adults, with peers and with their communities. This feeling of connectedness and a sense of belonging increases confidence and the ability to foster relationships – important parts of mental wellness!
“The Big Brothers Big Sisters has made such a great impact on our lives. Before we enrolled in the program, my daughter was very withdrawn and shy. She didn’t have many friends, she was picked on at school, and didn’t want to attend any social outings. She was sad a lot of the time and didn’t have any self-esteem.
Since being in the program my daughter has blossomed into the beautiful, sassy girl that I always knew she was. She absolutely loves attending the different events that the program participates in, even right down to the trick or treating at the office on Halloween. I owe so much to the program for just being there for us. [As] a single parent … I don’t feel alone anymore. Without [BBBS] I have no idea what my daughter’s mental health would be like. She now has friends, enjoys life and going out.”
