Common Roots Urban Farm – Woodside is a community garden located on the grounds of the Nova Scotia Hospital, overlooking Halifax Harbour. Common Roots uses gardening as a way to increase community and mental wellbeing and foster connection between each other and the environment. The gardening plots are used by patients and available to newcomers and the broader community.
Over the summer, our Community Grants funded a gardening program for patients at the Nova Scotia Hospital. Gardening provides a meaningful leisure activity for patients, and provides pre-employment skill development for others. And of course, the produce is enjoyed by all!
“I like gardening because it connects me to nature. It can make us so relaxed from stress, first because of the landscape, second because watching the process of the plants grow from seeds. It has a good impact on me physically and psychologically. It’s a rewarding experience.” — Gardener
