Community connections through theatre

Many of the community-based mental wellness initiatives we fund through our Community Grants foster community connections, offer social support, and allow participants to experience a sense of belonging.

We funded “Queer & Trans Youth Acts!”, a project of Halifax Theatre for Young People to create space for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth and allies to connect with each other and express their creativity.

This supportive and affirming theatre programming was delivered at three schools in HRM by facilitators who were members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community who had worked in theatre. During a series of workshops, students created short theatre scenes exploring the issues faced as a member or ally of the queer community.

Arts education provides unique spaces for growth, emotional exploration and expression, and building lasting and meaningful connection. Participating in arts activities can build self-esteem, self-acceptance, confidence and self-worth, which are protective factors for positive mental health.

“School staff commented on the young people’s increased confidence and creativity. They gained insight into ways of expressing themselves, the value of play and the world at large.” – Riley, Facilitator

Through the process, participants shared experiences, learned new skills and fostered connections. This project culminated in the three school groups gathering together, expanding their networks and community. The project had a positive impact for participants, with the majority agreeing the project had a “very positive” or “extremely positive” impact on their mental health.

We’re proud to support projects that foster community, connection and build resilience for young people.
